Paralegal award renamed to honour William J. Simpson
The Law Society Distinguished Paralegal Award was renamed the William J. Simpson Distinguished Paralegal Award in honour of Mr. Simpson's outstanding contribution to the implementation of paralegal regulation by the Law Society. The renaming of the award is retroactive to its establishment in September, 2011. Motion.
By-Law 2 amended re: Law Society services in French
Convocation amended By-Law 2 [Corporate Provisions] to establish the right of a person to receive services from the Law Society in French and English. The By-Law amendments replace the provisions of the Law Society's 1989 French Language Services Policy, to be supplemented by operational policies to guide implementation of the By-Law provisions. Human Rights Monitoring Group interventions approved
Convocation approved the Human Rights Monitoring Group's request for interventions in the following cases:
- Judge Iris Yassmin Barrios Aguilar - Guatemala
- Lawyer Muharrem Erbey - Turkey
- Lawyer Hadi Esmaeilzadeh - Iran
- Lawyer Maria Catherine Dannug-Salucon - Philippines
Rules of Practice and Procedure amended
Convocation approved housekeeping amendments to the Hearing Division Rules of Practice and Procedure and Forms, and the Appeal Division Rules and Forms. Motion.
Nominations for Law Society Treasurer
The following benchers have been nominated for the office of Treasurer: Raj Anand, Christopher Bredt and Janet Minor. The Treasurer is elected by secret ballot by the benchers of the Law Society. The election will take place at Convocation on June 26, 2014.
Audit and Finance Committee report
Convocation approved amendments to the Law Society's Investment Policy. Convocation also approved the continued retention of the Law Society's Investment Manager and Investment Custodian. Full report.
